Module 2 Assessment

Important!
You must attend ALL LABS and HAND IN ALL assignments and formal reports. Attendance will be taken at all labs. Failure to do this will result in a mark of 'not complete' for APSC100.
Students who are ill for a lab or have other extenuating circumstances must see the Module 2 coordinator in order to repeat the lab or to obtain an excused absence.

Marking

You will receive a letter grade mark for each assignment and formal report you do in Module 2. The grades are A, B, C or D (you will find a more detailed description of each grade category below). For the project lab you will receive two different grades - one for 'effort' and the other based on the formal report (which you submit as a pair in this case).

Note:
If the prelab is unsatisfactory or missing, your mark will automatically be reduced by one letter grade.
If the report is late, your mark will automatically be reduced by one letter grade. (Reports are due within one week at the START of your lab time)

The final grade is determined by the weightings listed below.

All reports and assignments are to be handed in no later than one week after the start time of the lab. The exceptions to this are labs 2, 4, and 5 for which the labs are completed in the lab and handed in at the end of the lab period.

  • Weighted Requirements:
    1. The Error Analysis Worksheet due by 3 PM on the Monday of week 2, in the boxes outside Stirling 405 (5%).
    2. Tutorial Lab 1 will be marked on the assignment (8%).
    3. Tutorial Lab 2 will be marked on the "partial" formal lab due the following week (8%).
    4. Labs 1, 3, and 6 will be marked on their formal reports (16% each) and labs 2, 4, and 5 will be marked on their in-lab components (5% each).*
    5. Project Experiment Formal Report and Effort: assigned by the TA, based on your overall approach and effort (total=16%).
*If the prelab is unsatisfactory one letter grade will be deducted from your final lab report mark

  Guidelines used by TAs to determine grades for your formal reports and assignments:

A
  1. Excellent understanding and description of concepts,and insightful discussion of results
  2. Excellent error analysis procedures
  3. Excellent report presentation.
  4. Some minor mistakes may be present (e.g. significant figures off slightly, obvious typographical errors, forget to discuss residuals)

(note that the formal report in manual Appendix 2 would receive an A)

B
Either of 1, 2, or 3 above is below the 'excellent' level, but the report is still very good. The report should be written well enough to convey that the student has understood the concepts and error analysis.
C
The report is passable, but it is obvious that the student has not put a great deal of effort into the work. At least two of 1, 2 and 3 above are satisfactory, but would not be considered good.
D
This is a failing grade. It is obvious that the student has not put much effort or time into the work. There is no evidence that the student understands the concepts or error analysis well. The report is very short and/or poorly written.
N/C
Some sections of the report are missing or incomplete. This will count as a missed lab.

Formal Lab Report Marking

Since this module is intended to teach you how to communicate information as well as how to obtain it, half of the marks will be allocated to content and half to report presentation. See Appendix 2 for a detailed description of the important features of formal lab report writing.
