Adaptation of Exercise Equipment for Wheelchair Access

Revved Up is an assisted exercise program for adults living with mobility impairment such as Spinal Cord Injury, Cerebral Palsy, Stroke, Acquired Brain Injury etc. Mobility ranges from independently mobile to quadriplegia. Participants first meet with a personal trainer who writes up their exercise program. They are then matched with a volunteer who goes through their program, gives them exercise tips and keeps them motivated. The new arm ergometers in use by Revved Up come equipped with a chair attached to a rail. The chair is removable, however the rail makes it impossible for a power wheel chair to advance to the handles, and a manual wheel chair sits too low for the handles. Students in this project adapted an arm ergometer to be usable from manual and power wheel chairs.

      Wheelchair Access Design

Students in this project designed a solution that allowed users to roll up a ramp to a platform, allowing them comfortable use of the arm ergometer. A prototype was built and is pictured to the left.
