Information for Faculty Sponsors
This page will outline what we require from our APSC 100 Module 3 Faculty Sponsors. If you have further questions about your role, please feel free to contact Brian Frank (brian.frank@queensu.ca).
Faculty Sponsor Role
Faculty Sponsors may either devise their own open-ended engineering design project (suitable for a group of 4 first year students to complete in 11 weeks), or choose a project provided by the APSC 100 course team (usually involving a community group, outside agency, or special group on campus). There is a bit more work involved if the Sponsor wishes to provide their own project, but overall the time commitment for sponsoring an APSC 100 design project is minimal. An upper year student Project Manager is assigned to each project, and will take care of the majority of the day-to-day management of the student teams.
Once the projects have been developed, the only further requirement of a Faculty Sponsor is their attendance at two sets of presentations (and the marking of them), and the marking of two sets of written reports. Evaluation forms will be provided by the Project Managers, and are also available for download below. We also strongly suggest that Sponsors be available for consult (if necessary) with their Project Managers and/or groups throughout the term. However, the degree of contact with students will vary by project and preference of the Sponsor.
Specific Requirements
For projects developed by the Faculty Sponsor:
- Develop, test, and document the design project.
- Ensure that the design project meets the guidelines.
- Prepare a summary of project for placement on the APSC 100 website.
- Prepare notes and background materials for the Project Manager and the student teams.
- See below for further requirements
For ALL projects:
- Be available for Project Manager consultation at the beginning of each term
- Be available for student team consultation
- Read a short (1-page) mid-term progress report from each group, and provide oral and/or written feedback (week 8)
- Mark and provide feedback to the students on the proposal and final written reports (roughly weeks 5 & 12)
- Mark and provide feedback to the students on the proposal and final oral presentations (roughly weeks 4 & 11)
- Review the design project at the end of the academic year
Evaluation Forms
Both Faculty Sponsors and Project Managers will fill out two evaluation forms for each team at the mid-point and final period of each term. The Oral/Written Communications Evaluation form specifically assesses students' presentations and reports. The Team Evaluation form assesses each group overall (the communications mark is included in this overall assessment).
Team Evaluation Form
(Faculty Sponsors may find it difficult to grade groups on all categories, but should fill out those that they feel comfortable evaluating)
Oral/Written Communications Evaluation Form
(Final marks from this form should be transferred to the appropriate portion of the Team Evaluation form)
